Okami Review

okami-best-ps2-gameEver wonder what it means to work like a dog? Then try and play Okami. Although it’s technically a wolf, but that’s the closest you can get to being a dog I think :D . Okami is one of the best PS2 games that I’ve played in 2006. It combines fighting action (as a wolf), confusing puzzles, humor, annoying sidekick, artistic values, and a uniqueness of using brush strokes as one of your weapons against the enemies. That’s something you won’t see in many games. The graphics and lively colours of the game will also mesmerize you from time to time.

STORYLINE

You assume the role as Shinto sun god, Amaterasu, coming down to earth in a form of a white wolf, fighting against the dark evil Orochi who’s turned the world into a complete wasteland. You have a sidekick in a form of a green bug, Issun, to help you getting some clues and amuse you with its lame jokes along your journey. Orochi was once disturbing the peace of Kamiki Village, and eventually banished by Nagi, a village warrior along with a white wolf Shiranui. So Amaterasu, in a way ,using the incarnation of this white wolf to once again fight Orochi to its death. Along the journey, she has to find 13 brush spirits and use the brush magical power to defeat Orochi and heal the land.

GAMEPLAY

You get the usual beat-em-up moves but this time no more punching. Instead, you’ll be headbutting all the way to Orochi as well as some kick moves. Luckily you have some Celestial Weapons to use : Reflector for your normal melee attack and shielding, Rosaries for whip-like attack and projectiles, and Glaive, also as a melee weapon but slow to attack.

The best weapon is of course the Celestial Brush which can be used by holding the R1 button and square button to draw lines or circles on your screen. Different strokes give different attacks (or magical power). All of those techniques and drawings are recorded in your journal, so don’t worry if you can’t remember them. Combine brush techniques with your normal kick-headbutt-slash moves and the enemies will be gone in no time.

The area is massive, and going from one place to another is really time consuming. For later parts of the game, you can teleport to different areas using Mermaid coins that can be purchased. But until that, you’ve got to walk, run or swim to get to different places which is really a hassle.

Camera angle can be annoying sometimes, especially during boss battles. You’ll end up looking at the wolf’s butt instead of the enemies, so that needs to be adjusted from time to time while you’re fighting. That can disrupt your concentration if you’re not getting used to it. Some conversations and narrations are a bit long so that kinda put me off, and worse, you can’t skip it. It really slows down the momentum of the game.

Weapons and several key items can also be upgraded using Praise points which you’ll get whenever you help make the land a better place, such as feeding the animals, make the tress bloom and so on. You can also Praise points by defeating sub-bosses and doing the side quests. Although side quests are a bit length at times, it’s worth it if you’re planning to max out your weapons stats.

LIKES

  • Graphics and colors – simply breathtaking
  • Celestial brush technique
  • Puzzles – I just love puzzles

DISLIKES

  • Long conversation and narrations
  • Sometimes a bit lost on what to do next
  • Annoying camera angle

What other critics said

GamePro – 10.0

The past couple years have seen feckless pseudo-games that hid a complete lack of entertainment value behind a specious layer of supposed “art.” Okami shames them simply by being the genuine article: A stunningly gorgeous and unique masterpiece that effortlessly blends art and storytelling with puzzles and amusement. Miss this landmark effort at your peril

GameSpy – 10.0

It’s one of the best-looking, most creative 3D action adventures in recent memory, and every PS2 owner out there owes it to themselves to snap up a copy to enjoy immediately. Truly magical stuff.

Yahoo! Games – 10.0

Over the years, many teams have tried to match the brilliance of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda series of games. Some have come close, but Okami is one of the few that can stand toe-to-toe with Nintendo’s masterpieces. If you own a PlayStation 2, it’s a game that needs to be in your collection; and if you don’t yet own a PS2, Okami is a reason to buy one.

IGN – 9.1

Okami is a game we’ve been waiting on for a long, long time, and for the most part it has lived up to our extremely high expectations. It’s beautiful, charismatic, engaging and one of the most original games you’ll play anytime soon

Gamezone – 9.4

If you buy only one PlayStation 2 game this fall, make it Okami. Don’t get completely caught up in the next-gen hype. Every moment is heightened by breathtaking beauty. At times you’ll forget that this game was designed for a current-gen console

Computer and Video Games – 9.5

Restore nature, battle enemies or explore countryside… Okami is the most beautiful game on PS2.

Gamespot – 9.0

Okami’s visual design instantly stands out, but it turns out to be just one of many inspired aspects of this impressive action adventure game.

Average critics’ score – 9.6

This truly unique game will give you a new experience in your gaming activity. You’ll spend hours in front of your TV but every second is absolutely worth it.
